Yard Sale Finds

You could really call me the reluctant yard saler.  A friend called this weekend and told me of this great estate sale (which, in our town, is just a yard sale where the grown children are liquifying the estate of the said downsizing relative).  Anyway, the yard sale was full of some nice mid-century vintage kitchen ware.  But, being in the mood for back to school and fall, I spied this adorable little world globe for $1.  I am sure I had one of these when I was a kid, it is a bank and I got the bonus of a 1945 penny inside.

Now, once I was awake and yard selling you can't stop me.  So I have to check out a few more.  I found this adorable little ironstone pitcher for 50 cents!!  I was a happy woman, definitely worth waking up for.  Did I mention it was 10:30 AM when I got this wake up call, well school starts soon and no more sleeping in. 

We hit the yard sales pretty late so hubs mentions we could head up to my favorite antique shop.  Always loving his spontaneity, I am game for it.  I found this 1969 Illinois license plate in the Illini colors which is perfect for a fall vignette.  This was just $5.

More fall goodness in this spectacular paint-by-number for only $6.  Don't you love fantastic finds!

Metamorphosis Monday: Lamp Makeover

I needed a lamp and I knew what I wanted.  I wanted something similar to this lamp from Pottery Barn.

Instead of filling the base of my lamp with a silk fern or driftwood I wanted to fill my lamp with shells.

Here is another lamp from Pottery Barn that is filled with shells.  This is the look I am aiming for but with a simpler lamp base.

I found this lamp at the thrift store.  These lamps were popular in the early 1990's.  I have one that I bought at that time.  The base has a wing nut that will unscrew and you can fill the lamp with objects, such as in the Pottery Barn lamps pictured above.  I wanted to update this lamp and get rid of the brass finish.  So, I took the lamp apart and taped all  the areas that might be sprayed by the  spray paint  I am using to refinish it.  

Here is how it turned out.   I used white spray paint first but it didn't take to the finish due to some flaws on the brass finish originally.  So, I repainted it with a textured sandstone color that is made for outdoor metal furniture and it took really well.  

The total cost of my lamp makeover:

Lamp $4

spray paint around $5

shade (also found in excellent condition at thrift store) $3. 

Total =$12
