Home Sweet Home # 84

Hello and welcome to Home Sweet Home!  Here is what I have been working on this week.  I traded out my back-to-school vignette for a fall vignette on the buffet.

I took some pictures of my demitasse set with this bittersweet.

And, I had a real eye-opener when I tired out my first recipe from a Depression-Era cookbook.  Read my revelation here about this potato casserole.

Now I would like to highlight some of the posts that caught my eye last week.

The Farmer's Daughter at The Country Farm Home  showed off her newly repainted cabinets.  Just love the cabinets and the cast iron...and the ironstone!

Gail at Gail's Decorative Touch showed off a newly found scale that looked fantastic with her collections.
Erin at Just Grand showed how she choose a color scheme for her Michigan cottage.  She calls this the beach glass bedroom.

Paula at Farmhouse Life showed off her cozy little bedroom!  So cute!

There are many great links each week!  Thank you to all who join me at Home Sweet Home!

Fabulously Rustic

Source: scanned  Romantic Prairie Style  Summer 2012

One of my favorite magazines to premiere this summer was Romantic Prairie Style by Fifi O'Neill.  The magazine delivered much inspiration and drool worthy interiors all with a vintage twist.

The vintage all mixed with the rustic was so up my alley.  I couldn't help but be intrigued by this one home photographed with the deer antlers mounted right on the wall!  I happened to have a set of antlers just like this!  What to do...what to do.   I thought about it awhile.  Should I just mount them right on the wall?

Well bare antlers can look amazing in a lot of spaces.  I am not against mounting them as is.  But, I wanted to display them in my dining room so, I thought they needed a little more modesty.  Yes, that meant I was going to try taxidermy!  How hard could this project be right?  Here are my supplies:  wooden plaque, antlers, hot glue gun, leather square, and upholstery tacks.

I spray painted the wooden plaque first.  I then hot glued the antlers to the plaque.  Then I sketched out a pattern for my leather cover.

I then cut the leather out.
I then trimmed the leather even more and positioned the tacks.

I did a few tacks to anchor it first.

The bland spray paint just wasn't the look I was wanting so I sanded that up and applied a glaze to the whole plaque to make it look a little more aged.

So here is where I wanted to put them, right above my buffet in the dining room.  I was pleased with how they turned out.  It wasn't hard at all to do this.  A bit of a rustic touch for fall and winter.

That vine hanging in the side of the photo above is this.  I found a real bittersweet vine for fall!!!  Love this stuff, talk about fabulously rustic, bittersweet is it!

Collectibles

You see them all of the time, new lists of the hot collectibles.  If you have ever been by my blog it won't surprise you what my favorite collectibles are.  I am very fond of photographing them.  I have some favorites that I consider very photogenic.  My all time favorite collectible is transferware.  Pictured above is two patterns from Johnson Brothers, that I bought thriftly at a discount store.

This pattern is also by Johnson Brothers.  I went to an auction with my Dad years ago and he bought me a whole box of this for $13.  It was the very end of the auction and not too many people were still hanging around.  I love deals like that!

This is a new collection for me.  I have only had this large pitcher for a long time but, lately I have been picking up many pieces of ironstone very inexpensively at thrift stores and discount stores.

This is my husbands favorite collectible.  He likes my pewter collection.  I find pieces of this also in thrift stores, but the original collection came to me from my family.

Maps & globes are a hot item right now.  I have always considered them an asset when decorating.  I picked these up at discount stores, yard sales, and an antique store.

I have always identified with Belle from Beauty and the Beast (Disney version), with her nose stuck in a book.  I love antique books.  The ones that get my attention are from my favorite authors or poetry.

This is just a few of my favorite collectibles.  What are yours?

Ironstone & Straw

Ya'll know about this time of the year I am itching to do something with a fall theme.  I couldn't think of a better combination than white ironstone and straw bales.

This was that little vintage ironstone teapot I found at the thrift store on clearance for $2.50.  Chari at Happy To Design  emailed me and showed me the rest of the dishes that go with this teapot.  I was amazed because I just happened to realize that this very set of dishes was down at our Salvation Army on clearance for $10!  Chari said she purchased her dishes at Green Stamps!  Do you guys remember those?  I have bought things with Green Stamps when I first set up house.  So, anyway I am a proud owner of 40 more pieces to this vintage ironstone set for just $10.  I plan on using it in one of my Halloween tablescapes, more to come on that later.

Mom had been storing a little spice cabinet for me for years.   I got it back recently and found this in one of the drawers!  I'm keeping it!  That is what I call interest!

Fall is so on my mind!  I will be posting more about summer looks but, the hay bales are starting to multiply in my dining room!

Antique Wardrobe Turned into Sewing Room

I took an antique wardrobe I recently brought home and created a sewing room.  I have never had a place to create or store any of my sewing gear.  I always just pulled it out, had it in the way, and then put it away hoping the kids didn't destroy it.

I tried to use only vintage or antique items to store everything in.  This side holds the hanging fabric that is ready to be made into something.  I have a cutting board folded up on the side and a serger in the bottom.  Above the fabric on the shelf, I have a vintage office basket holding my shipping envelopes and a antique punch bowl holding ribbon.

I really thought hard about what to do with the ribbon.  There are many cute ways to store ribbon.  This punch bowl is huge and it was perfect to do the job.  It also gives ma a great way to store the punch bowl and when it is party time I can still pull it out and use it.

Knowing how many beautiful work spaces there are in blogland I had to try to make this small sewing room a little bit fun.  So I created a mini doily bunting and a hand lettered burlap banner to give a little inspiration to the space.

This wardrobe is really huge.  When a whole sewing machine fits on a shelf, it gives you a feel for how much storage space there was to work with.

For a lot of things I create I really never use a pattern, but I had a few patterns I placed in this vintage hanging basket.  The only new thing in the wardrobe is the bulletin board, which I can use for inspiration pictures, fabric, or trim swatches.

The rest of the punch bowl set came in handy too.  The under plate is holding the twelve cups which make a nice place to store lace.  I am always throwing a pin or single button into the cabinet that holds my sewing equipment and I thought the under plate will be a great thing to use in this way as a catch all.

I thought this was a perfect place to show off a few treasures from some important sewers in my life.  This is a vintage Holly Hobby doll hand made by my Grandmother for me.

Another treasure, on the left, is a china doll handmade for me by my mother.  A piece of art pottery holds some rope and a vintage Ball canning jar holds all of the scissors.

A zinc cloche holds a stack of thread, making it easy to see which color you need.

This shelf has vintage tins and canisters full of lavender to make sachets.  There is also a vintage sewing kit made out of a jelly jar, a white picket planter holding white lace and rick rack, and an antique toy Singer sewing machine.

And, here on the final shelf is the sewing machine, a vintage card file box, and a "Butts" pail.  The "Butts" pail still has the Woolworth's sticker on it and I found it for nothing at a yard sale.  It was a perfect place to store a bunch of buttons on cards.

Here the wardrobe is closed.  I keep a table right by this which will be the perfect work surface and possibly not too disturbed by my kids if I pull something out to work on it.  Possibly... I will get more made for my Etsy shop now!?
