Message Center Bulletin Board

Every Mom knows you have to have a place to organize all the things that go on in your kids life.  When they start school you need it just to keep up with their life.  This was my message center.  It had been this way for 4 years.  It was very ugly and outdated.  My soon-to-be 2nd grader no longer needs to practice the calendar and it just sorta morphed all over this door.  It was time for a makeover of my message center.

I found these cork tiles and it gave me an idea.  They are just four single cork tiles you place stick and peel fasteners too and put right on the surface.

I had a beautiful toile print leftover from a project and it was just enough to transform my tiles.

I cut the fabric to fit and hot glued it to the back of the cork.  I placed the fasteners to the cork tile.  I peeled the gold backing off and put the cork tiles right on my kitchen door.

And here is my new message center, much improved over the old one.  And, best of all it was thrifty!!   The cork tiles are at Walmart and they were $5.94!

Nevermore

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven thou," I said, "art sure no craven,

Ghastly, grim, and ancient raven, wandering from the nightly shore.
Tell me what the lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore."
Quoth the raven, "Nevermore."
~Excerpt from The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe

I am really ready for Halloween.  I just like the imagination side of it all, nothing too scary.  I hope every one had a great weekend.  I got my house all clean and more sewn up for my Etsy shop.   What have you been up to?
Both photos have been altered with textures by Kim Kalssen.

Home Sweet Home #30

Welcome to Home Sweet Home!  Today I have sewn some more table runners with a new love of mine French General fabric.

French General fabrics are the creation of Kaari Meng.  She owns a store in Southern  California filled with reproductions of vintage French Country textiles, notions, and more.

Whenever I can get some French General fabric I will be using it and stocking my Etsy shop.

I am getting into Fall, here with my centerpiece.
Two of the above table runners can be purchased in my Etsy shop.
Thanks for joining me at Home Sweet Home!

Roosters, Toile, and a Sunflower

I am joining Shelia at Note Songs for her Rooster and Chick party.  I wanted to reprise a post I did last year with a rooster.  This, without a doubt, is the most searched post that I have had.  Undoubtedly, the rooster is a very popular home decor theme.

The rooster plates are from TJ Maxx.

The toile is Waverly, I believe it is called Country Life.  The pewter is Wilton Armetale.

The reason I think this post has been hit through the search engine so much wasn't really my doing.  It was this picture I posted along with it.  A reader had asked how to turn her all-white kitchen into French Country.

How to turn an all-white kitchen into a French Country kitchen.
From white to wonderful in 4 easy steps.
  1. Painted the wall light yellow.

  2. Added a toile window treatment.

  3. Put a rooster and sunflowers on the island.

  4. Added wrought iron bar stools in oil rubbed bronze.

I have seen many people with white walls wondering what to do with them.  I thought this was such an easy and simple transformation  that I would share it.  Article written by Mark McCauley ASID.  Here is the link to read the whole article. Photo and article found at http://www.hgtv.com.
You could take most decorating styles and break down at least four key items that make a space always say it is a certain style.  Now, going beyond that and adding even more detail is what makes it yours.  Hope that helps!
Please join Shelia for the Rooster and Chick party.
She would be glad to have you.

Sunflowers, Toile, and a Rooster

What is it about toile, sunflowers, and a rooster that go together?

Toile de Jouy; a fabric that originated in France in the late 1700's, is usually a white or off white fabric printed with a pastoral scene.  The translation simply means "cloth from Jouy-en-Josas," a town in north central France.  This fabric is by Waverly the pattern is Country Life in black.
A rustic rooster always looks at home in a French country setting.

Sunflowers are at home in a old crock.

A black candlestick works well here.

Salad plate by Maxcera pattern Terra Cotta Sunflower
Goblets by The Cellar made for Macys

Thanks for taking a stroll through my French Country tablescape.  I will be joining Susan for her 100th Tablescape Thursday at her site Between Naps on the Porch.  Congratulations Susan on your 100th!  You have created a favorite meme for many!

After I created this table I searched the web for more inspiration on French Country and fall decorating.  I came across this picture and I thought it would be a great inspiration photo.  A person wrote into HGTV and said she had a white kitchen how could she decorate it?  The designer suggested this combination.
