Bee Tea

This is a post I am re-posting from last year.  My lavender is blooming and this sweet pottery has been a favorite find of mine.  I have received many hits on this post.  The artist, Deb Mores,  that created the pottery found my post and has left a comment.  This pottery now is on my kitchen cabinets and I love to stop and admire it.  It is such a cute tea  set.  This post last posted on 8/30/10.

I am usually not very lucky at Goodwill.  I really don't bother going because I never find anything, but this week I did.  I found this tea set by Deb Mores.  The pattern is Buzz Buzz.  It was made in 1999.

The tea pot and sugar are shaped like a straw bee hive.  The are bees buzzing all about.  Lavender is blooming all around to keep the little bees happy.

A bee perched on the tea pot  lid.  There is also a bee on the sugar lid.

As luck would have it, my lavender just bloomed a second time so I picked a bunch for my tea.

I also have found a lovely little tea towel made of cotton and linen that has been hand embroidered with little bees.

I was really pleased with the find.  I got a large platter, 4 dinner plates, a pitcher, and this tea set for $12.75.  The tea mug is from my Corelle Country Cottage.  It just about matches the color of the lavender on the tea pot and accessories.
Thanks for joining me for a late summer tea...buzz.....buzz

Time Capsule

On the antique path this weekend I found a little time capsule.

It was in the form of the Hommer's Jumbo Size Kitten Sewing Kit.  It was absolutely charming.

Let's take a look inside .  It came as is, with the remnants of a childhood project left behind.

There were a great many needle cases in the kit.  This one was my favorite.

A Flapper on this needle case.

This needle case advertised roofing.

At the bottomof the sewing kit was the original paper that came with it.

The sweetest thing in this sewing kit, was  a little handmade doll for holding a child's sewing notions.

To my surprise, I lifted the little dress and found a hidden pin cushion with the last project's pins still intact.  Such a fantastic time capsule, for, I fear gone are the days of this simplicity.

Ornaments From Thrift Store Frames

I found these great frames at the thrift store and they had potential.   I had in mind that they would make nice Christmas ornaments with family photos.  I bought them marked down at half the price shown.

They were in need of a good cleaning.

They were very nice but, the finish wouldn't enhance my Christmas tree at all.  I decided to spray paint them gold.

I repainted them and printed up some of my favorite family photos from the computer to put in them.

They really made great ornaments!  They were $1.25 a piece and I was really pleased how they turned out.
I will join these thrifty ladies, go and visit them.

Wreath Makeover with Frames

I made a Christmas wreath that centered around these two little frames.  I found the frames at the thrift store, they were half price and I thought they would work nicely.  I took the backing off and spray painted them white.
I then highlighted the design on them with Rub'N Buff in Grecian Gold.  This product is made for frames but it works for many craft applications.

I glued them nested together and then hung them from the center of the wreath.   I took the top of the wreath and added two picks and placed a new ribbon over that.  Very simple and inexpensive.
The wreath I already had.  I bought the frames for 75 cents for both.  I had the Rub 'N Buff and the spray paint from other projects.  I also had the Christmas greenery picks form a previous year.  So, I had 75 cents in this wreath.

The Tale of Four Pheasants

I saw some pheasants at Hobby Lobby that I wanted but they each had a broken tail so I passed on them.   Then I acquired these two pheasants at the thrift store for 50 cents and $1  but, I wasn't really loving their finish.

So, since my Thanksgiving table was starting to have a gilded theme, the pheasants got the spray paint can just like the acorns and the leaves.  I left this pheasant solid gold.  It made it look modern.  I liked the change but I also wanted to play around with the finish.

This little pheasant was going to get the Rub'n Buff treatment.  I hadn't tried this product before.  It has carnauba wax and copper mixed in it to give a wax metallic finish.
I put the black Rub'n Buff on and let it dry.

Then you buff off some of the finish.  This is how it looked.  Which do you like better?  I left one each way.

I then lucked into a large male and female pheasant at the Goodwill.

They were in pretty good shape so I go them for $1.75.

I decided to spray paint them white.

They needed more definition to bring out the texture so I applied a mocha glaze.  I ended up giving them two coats of glaze.  These will be my Thanksgiving centerpiece!  I finally have pheasants for my table for a very inexpensive price.
Pheasants $3.25
Spray paint already had
Rub 'n Buff $2.65 a tube
Glaze already had
Total for 4 pheasants around $5.90
Hobby Lobby Pheasants $14.99 a piece

Making a Cloche

I see this type of clock in the thrift stores and I had decided I would try my hand at making a cloche out of it.  The dome was glass but the base was plastic.
I took the clock apart and tried to salvage the base, but it just wasn't going to work so I pitched everything but the glass dome.
The dome was a perfect fit to this little French Haviland plate I found at the Salvation Army for 25 cents.  The white tree and the deer were just modern Christmas decorations.  And, I sprinkled a little fake snow on it all.  The clock cost 50 cents at the thrift store on clearance.  So I created this for under $5.

It was my lucky thrifting week because I also found this.  I am sure it is a hurricane shade of some kind but, it also will work for a cloche.  It was also 50 cents.

I placed it on a little Limoges bread and butter plate with a glass ornament and it was a very nice cloche.  You can get any glass ornament to stand upright if you put a little hot glue on the bottom and spread it out as a flat base with a popsicle stick.

I will link this to these blogs, please go and visit them.

Thanksgiving Mantletop

I put some things out on the mantel for Thanksgiving.

I really liked this garland, it is a little bit like jewelry.  I found it at Hobby Lobby.

The candles glowing are a must when it gets cold outside.

The cornucopia was the perfect place to try something completely different.  So, I put a flower pick in the bottom, then I placed a gold bird's nest on top of that with a gilded baby boo pumpkin.

My favorite is the art print.  I found it in a Ladies Home journal from the early 1900's.
"The Abduction of Pocahontas" by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, c. 1910, recreates the arrival of Captain Samuel Argall (at left) at Jamestown with Pocahontas as his captive. He had kidnapped her in 1613 "for the ransoming of so many Englishmen as were prisoners with Powhatan: as also to get ... armes and tools ... [and] some quantities of Corne, for the colonies relief." The Europeans, who regarded Pocahontas as a princess, were surprised that her father did not redeem her, but in a matrilineal society she could not inherit her father's power and so was relatively unimportant.  (www.vahistorical.org)
Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (August 18, 1863 – March 18, 1930) was an American painter best known for his series of 78 scenes from American history, entitled The Pageant of a Nation, the largest series of American historical paintings by a single artist. (wikipedia.org)
*Note- this was the art print I owned, so I put it on the mantle.  Jean Leon Gerome also did a scene of the "First Thanksgiving," a more suitable art print for the season.  I just appreciate the art so I put it up.
