I found this tray at the thrift store a week ago. I paid $4 for it and I didn't particularly like the fruit, but the shape and color were very good and I knew I could transform it.
For all of you HomeGoods fans, that is where the tray came from. I thought that was interesting because we don't have one of those shops within a 200 hundred mile radius.
The first thing I did was to give it a coat of spray paint in ivory satin finish.
I gave it a second coat of spray paint not caring if you could still see the fruit because you won't see it when I am done.
Next, I gave the back a light coat just so it was freshened up and matched. The spray paint was a really good match to the existing paint, so a light touch with spray paint kept me from having runs.
Next, I scuffed up the edges a little to reveal the old gold paint that was on the edges when I started.

I had chosen a heavy card stock scrapbook paper to cover the tray with. I trimmed it accordingly.

My trusty assistant (4 year old son) helps me along painting a little Mod Podge onto the part of the tray that will have the card stock applied.
The first layer of card stock applied with Mod Podge.
Here is the final project. I applied one more layer of the map card stock to cover the entire tray. Then I placed another sheet of card stock with the Effile Tower on it to the tray. I gave the top two coats of Mod Podge. I allowed them to completely dry, and then I applied two coats of matte clear acrylic sealer.
Now we can have some tea!
