Spider Silhouette Lantern

To make a silhouette for your lantern you will need either Vellum or Tracing Paper.  The Vellum was from an office supply store and it ran between $7-12. (depending on size, 50 sheets)  Kinda pricey.  I went to Walmart and found Mead Tracing paper for $2.64 for 40 sheetsI may take the Vellum back.

A rectangular lantern works well for this effect.
I am again using Martha Stewart's templates.  You can get some here.
Or, do what I did and check  The Best of Martha Stewart Living Halloween out of the library.

I didn't blow up the template.  I just used it as a guide and drew mine larger.  I made the structure of the web with a ruler and hand drew the web.   I am not a perfectionist.  You will be able to tell that sometimes, but perfection doesn't exist in nature and you can work with just about anything.

Here is where you can see that I have a piece of web that doesn't look the same thickness as the rest, so I placed the spider over it and his legs will mask my thick web area. This is what I mean by working with a project to make it work.   I just placed the spider under the web and traced it right where I wanted it.

Now, here you can see that the paper turned horizontal doesn't quite fit the lantern all the way around; but, it did cover two sides.  I will come back and fill that in with some more paper and possibly another spider.

Okay, later on I got on the computer and found this spider at Matthew Mead's 2009 Halloween Templates.  Here you can see it is way too big.  So, I will show you the easy way to re-size the template.

Right click and click Save Image As.

I saved mine to a folder I use for blog photos.  You can save it anywhere you want to.

When you click save your download box pops up.

Right click on the file and open it.

So here again you have you too big of a spider.  Take your mouse and roll the scroll and it changes size.  Here it is 30% of the original size.  Get it to the desired size.

Now put a tiny piece of tape on your tracing paper and trace that spider with a pencil right off of your computer screen.

So here is my spider the right size traced into place on my paper.

So here is the second spider  in the lantern.
Here is the finished effect.  Any pattern can be used.  Very fun for your Halloween tables.
